Earth Day 101

Happy Earth Day 2018! We want to share with you some of our favorite ways we like to show love to mama earth. Being intentional about how we treat the land we walk on is important and it feels good too. But we get it… some days it’s not easy to be green and it may be a hassle at times, but we are here to show you how easy it can be to do a little bit every day to make a difference. First, let’s give you a little background info on how our greenhouses stay... well, green!

We are the first culinary herb grower in the U.S to be certified as a sustainable grower. Now that’s pretty cool. We accomplished this by utilizing reusable resources such as solar power energy. Here in the Coachella Valley, we average about 354 days of pure sunshine and sunshine = no electricity for lights. And get this, our hydroponic growing allows us to use 80% LESS water than field grown crops!

As you may know, all of our products are living! Because of this, the herbs last longer which means less food waste. We also use geothermal heat and beneficial insects. You might be thinking, how can insects possibly be beneficial for our herbs? Well these little critters, such as ladybugs, are very helpful to us. Instead of using pesticides, we let the good bugs eat the bad ones and that’s what helps our plants flourish.

Not only do we keep it green in our greenhouses, we here at the office try to show love to the earth every day. We went around the office and asked our fellow coworkers some of their favorite ways to stay green and here are some of the things we found:

We all love to use reusable water bottles to diminish the amount of plastic use in a day. Plus, some of these reusable bottles keep your water cold all day, are easy to travel with, and come in many color varieties and prints so why not! A few other things we try to use every day are all natural soaps, silverware instead of plastic utensils, and other sustainable products from companies that are smart about reducing unnecessary waste with practical solutions.

Here are a few of our favorite products to share with you! One of them is called Bee’s Wrap. It’s a reusable and washable wrap for your food. So instead of using plastic wrap or a sandwich bag, use Bee’s Wrap! It’s made out of organic cotton with beeswax, organic jojoba oil, and tree resin. It is a very easy and practical product to keep all your food freshly stored. Plus, all the prints are adorable.

Another favorite product of ours is from Love Bags. They are a company that makes reusable bags and much more! These bags have many print varieties and the best part about them is that they fold up into a pouch so they are easy to store! You can keep them in your purse or car and pull it out whenever you need it. We use these a lot for grocery shopping, carrying a lot of items into work, or even shopping at the mall. They make a great and cute alternative to using those plastic bags the store gives out and, if you live in California, it’s cheaper than purchasing a bag at the store.

We know that some days are easy and some may get a little rough, but all of these options are convenient for everyday use and they were made to be that way. We hope these little tips and products helped inspire you to be green! Now go show the earth some love!
