Basil

Bold but versatile, basil is the universal “go-to” herb. North Shore Living® basil has lush leaves, with a robust earthiness that can stand up to any flavor. Easy to use and care for, our living basil elevates the everyday by encouraging customers to cook with fresh ingredients and experiment with flavor. As our most beloved herb that goes with everything, our living basil is the perfect addition to any dish.

Care Instructions:

North Shore’s basil belongs on your kitchen counter—where flavor is right at your fingertips. To care for your basil, keep the plant out of the refrigerator and in indirect sunlight. Basil is known for being water-hungry, so we recommend that you keep an eye on your herbs and water them as needed. We grow our living herbs to the highest standards so they’re ready to be enjoyed as soon as you bring them home. Eat them, never replant them.

Flavor, Benefits & Kitchen Tips:

Basil has a clove-like flavor with a strong yet sweet smell. Basil’s pungent aroma makes it the perfect complement to tomatoes, as well as onions, garlic and olives. Although basil is known for its role in Italian cuisine, it is a staple feature in Asian cuisine too. Rich in vitamins and minerals, basil also has countless health benefits: antioxidant, anticancer, antiviral and antimicrobial capabilities; eugenol (essential oil found in basil) is anti-inflammatory; digestive aid; and herbal remedy for stress, asthma and diabetes in India.

For the most intense flavor, fresh basil should be added to cooked dishes or at the very end of the cooking process. Prolonged heat can cause basil’s oils to dissipate. When using North Shore’s living basil—which provides the premium herb experience—snip a portion from the root ball, wash it and pat it dry. Add whole basil leaves or chiffonade the basil to tenderize the herb and release extra flavor. If a recipe calls for dry basil, one part dry is equal to three parts North Shore. With our basil, your culinary creativity is boundless.
